#2798 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Dmalloc, ElectricFence and Valgrind dependencies

Reported by: alexander@… Owned by: Bruce Dubbs
Priority: low Milestone:
Component: BOOK Version: SVN
Severity: minor Keywords:

Description

Dmalloc, ElectricFence and Valgrind are useful only for package developers that want to find memory leaks, not for users, and thus should never be mentioned in the same line as other dependencies.

The following package references Dmalloc and ElectricFence correctly: GnuTLS.

The following packages list the debugging libraries as a regular optional dependency and have to be fixed: HTML Tidy, ImageMagick, Recode, TIN, LAME, PHP, Cyrus SASL, pilot-link, graphviz, gnucash, kdenetwork, libtheora.

Though I don't agree with Alexander about this ticket, I'll accept it and do something with it before the 6.4 release.

My opinion is that Alexander doesn't give "users" enough credit. Deciding whether or not she needs an optional dependency should be a simple enough task. However, for organizational purposes, separating them is not a bad idea.
