[a294e133]2<title>Introduction to <application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application></title>
[a90533f0]3
[a294e133]4<para>This chapter attempts to install a complete
5<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application>-&gnome-version; desktop
6environment and a limited
7<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> 1.4 library environment that is
8sufficient to run <application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> 1.4 applications included in this book. The
[a90533f0]9order of the pages are meant to follow the build order defined by the
[a35680c]10GNOME development team as published in the <ulink
[664988f4]11url="http://www.gnome.org/start/&gnome-version;/notes/rninstallation.html">release notes</ulink>.</para>
[a90533f0]12
[a294e133]13<para>The installation of <application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application>-&gnome-version; is a large undertaking and one we would
[5407cf7]14like to see you complete with the least amount of stress. One
[e7c62229]15of our first goals in this installation is to protect your previously
[a294e133]16installed software, especially if you are testing
17<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> on your machine.
18<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application>-&gnome-version; packages utilize the --prefix= option for configure, so we will
[e68cc1c]19use that and an Environment variable (<envar>GNOME_PREFIX</envar>) to add flexibility to
[5407cf7]20the install.</para>
[e7c62229]21
[664988f4]22<para>To install
23<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> as a desktop
24alternative, it is recommended that
[5407cf7]25you install with --prefix=/usr. If you are not sure that you are going
[664988f4]26to keep <application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> on your
27installation, you may install with
[5407cf7]28--prefix=/opt/gnome-&gnome-version;. Setting the Environment variable and the
29additional edits required by the second option are covered on the
[664988f4]30pre-installation page. Since
31<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> has matured,
32installing with --prefix=/usr is the preferable approach.</para>
[5407cf7]33
[a294e133]34<para>If you choose the second option, removal of
35<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application>-&gnome-version; is as easy
[2be0e0d]36as removing the edits from the pre-installation page and issuing the
[a75063d4]37following command:</para>
38<screen><userinput><command>rm /opt/gnome-&gnome-version; -r </command></userinput></screen>
[5407cf7]39
[ab8a3cb]40<para>If your system was completely built per <acronym>LFS</acronym> and
41<acronym>BLFS</acronym>
[a294e133]42instructions, you have a very good chance of using
43<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application>-&gnome-version;
[ab8a3cb]44after your first install. If you are a typical <acronym>LFS</acronym> user, you have made
[e7c62229]45modifications to the instructions along the way knowing that you have to
46take those modifications into account on future installations. You
[a294e133]47should have no problems integrating
48<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application>-&gnome-version; into your unique setup, but
49you will have 28 to 33 packages installed before you can run
50<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application>
[e7c62229]51through any testing (assuming your window manager is preinstalled and
[a294e133]52tested). We would anticipate that you will be rebuilding
53<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> at least
[5407cf7]54once to make adjustments for your setup.</para>
[a90533f0]55
[a294e133]56<para>If you are building a
57<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> 1.4 desktop environment, you would
58install only those libraries in the
59<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> 1.4 chapter
60<emphasis>and</emphasis> any dependencies listed on those pages, whether
61labeled or not. <application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> packages without pages are simply installed with:
[6992ce7]62<screen><command>./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome &amp;&amp;
[a90533f0]63make &amp;&amp;
[6992ce7]64make install</command></screen>
[a294e133]65These instructions are simplistic to facilitate removal of
66<application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> 1.4
[ab8a3cb]67from <acronym>BLFS</acronym> systems when it is no longer necessary. These instructions
68may be refined later to comply with <acronym>BLFS</acronym> standards for file locations,
[e68cc1c]69specifically <filename class='directory'>/opt/gnome/etc</filename> to
70<filename class='directory'>/etc</filename> and <filename
71class='directory'>/opt/gnome/var</filename> to
[a294e133]72<filename class='directory'>/var</filename>. You should consider using
73the <application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application> 1.4 hint
[f801af3]74located at <ulink url="http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/"/> if you
[a294e133]75have no interest in <application><acronym>GNOME</acronym></application>-&gnome-version;.</para>
