both smbd and nmbd showed ""OK"" during startup, but neither the processes
appeared nor the ports in netstat.

smbd and nmbd won't start if /var/run/samba and /var/log/samba don't exist. it
worked by creating them (please add this to the installation instructions)

as lfs4 deletes everything in /var/run during startup, you also have to add a
""mkdir /var/run/samba"" to the samba boot script.

after having done this, samba works fine for me (only tested with 2.2.7, don't
