Note: after running the ./configure and make commands I was seeing errors like: "config.mk:25: /unix-def.mk: No such file or directory". It worked much better when I changed to the "./src" directory before running "../configure --prefix==usr" and then running the "make" from there. I didn't see that noted anywhere on the freetype page in the blfs book.
