6download in order to build a basic Linux system. The listed version
7numbers correspond to versions of the software that are known to work and
8which this book is based upon.</para>

10<para>All the URL's below refer to the main LFS server. There are several
11FTP mirrors available from which you can download the files as well. The
12addresses of these can be found in <xref linkend="ch01-mirrors"/>.</para>

14<para>The LFS FTP archive only contains the versions of the packages that
15are used in this book. You can check the official download sites provided
16in <xref linkend="appendixa"/> to determine whether or not a newer package
17is available. If you do download a newer package, we would appreciate
18hearing whether you were able to install the package without any problems
19using this book's instructions.</para>
