[c99db3b]36<command>head</command>, <command>tail</command> and <command>sort</command>)
[ede9b9b]37will reject their traditional syntax, a syntax that has been in use for
[c91dd5b]38approximately 30 years. This old syntax is so pervasive that compatibility
[673b0d8]39should be preserved until the many places where it is used can be
40updated. Backwards compatibility is achieved by setting the
[574b0ea]41DEFAULT_POSIX2_VERSION environment variable to <quote>199209</quote> in the above
42command. If you don't want coreutils to be backwards compatible
[673b0d8]43with the traditional syntax, then simply omit setting the DEFAULT_POSIX2_VERSION
[574b0ea]44environment variable. Realise though, that doing so will mean you'll have
[673b0d8]45to deal with the consequences yourself: patch the many packages that still use
46the old syntax. We therefore recommend using the instructions exactly as given
47above.</para>
