2<title>Entering the chroot'ed environment</title>
3
4<para>
5It's time to enter our chroot'ed environment in order to install the
6rest of the software we need.
7</para>
8
9<para>
[607c7370]10Enter the following commands to enter the chroot'ed environment. From
[6370fa6]11this point on there's no need to use the $LFS variable anymore, because
[81a47c0]12everything a user does will be restricted to the LFS partition (since / is
[6370fa6]13actually /mnt/lfs but the shell doesn't know that).
14</para>
15
16<blockquote><literallayout>
17 <userinput>cd $LFS &amp;&amp;</userinput>
[b8b8c66]18 <userinput>chroot $LFS /usr/bin/env -i HOME=/root
19 \</userinput>
20 <userinput>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;TERM=$TERM /bin/bash --login</userinput>
[6370fa6]21</literallayout></blockquote>
22
[4af94fb]23<para>
[71545af]24The TERM=$TERM construction will set the $TERM value inside
[4af94fb]25chroot to the same value as outside chroot which is needed for programs
26like vim and less to operate properly.
27</para>
28
[6370fa6]29<para>
30Now that we are inside a chroot'ed environment, we can continue to
[08463b5b]31install all the basic system software. You have to make sure all the
[81a47c0]32following commands in this and following chapters are run from within the
[607c7370]33chroot'ed environment. If you ever leave this environment for any reason
34(when rebooting for example) please remember to mount $LFS/proc
35again and re-enter chroot before continuing with the
[b8f937d]36book.
[6370fa6]37</para>
38
[7e37742]39<para>
[607c7370]40Note that the bash prompt will contain "I have no name!" This is
[08463b5b]41normal because Glibc hasn't been installed yet.
