2<title>Who would want to read this book</title>

4<para>This book is intended for Linux users who want to setup their own
5custom built Linux system. Reasons for wanting to build such a system are
6diverse. Perhaps you want to get into more detail as to what
7happens behind the scenes. Perhaps you are fed up with distributions
8which are often bloated or perhaps you don't want to rely on pre-compiled
9binaries due to security concerns. There are many other reasons why
10someone may want a custom built system. If any of these reasons apply to
11you, this book is meant for you.</para>

13<para>The fruits of building your own system are plentiful, but the labor may
14be hard. There is a long way ahead, but in the end you will be
15able to call yourself the proud owner of your own Linux system,
16completely tailored after your needs. You will dictate the layout of
17bootscripts, the file system hierarchy, which programs are installed in
18which directory, which versions of software to use, and more. Perhaps the
19most important reason is that you will know exactly what is installed where,
20why, and how.</para>
