r8c136f3 r56cc653 3 3 <?dbhtml filename="setclock.html" dir="chapter07"?> 4 4 5 <para>This setclock script reads the time from your hardware clock (also 6 known as BIOS or CMOS clock) and either converts that time to localtime 7 using the <filename>/etc/localtime</filename> file (if the hardware clock 8 is set to GMT) or not (if the hardware clock is already set to localtime). 9 There is no way to auto-detect whether the hardware clock is set to GMT or 10 not, so we need to configure that here ourselves.</para> 5 11 6 <para>The setclock script is only for real use when the hardware clock (also 7 known as BIOS or CMOS clock) isn't set to GMT time. The recommended 8 setup is setting the hardware clock to GMT and having the time converted 9 to localtime using the /etc/localtime symbolic link. But if an 10 OS is run that doesn't understand a clock set to GMT (most notable are 11 Microsoft OS'es) you may want to set the clock to localtime so that 12 the time is properly displayed on those OS'es. This script will then 13 set the kernel time to the hardware clock without converting the time using 14 the /etc/localtime symlink.</para> 15 16 <para>If you want to use this script on your system even if the 17 hardware clock is set to GMT, then the UTC variable below has to be 18 changed to the value of <emphasis>1</emphasis>.</para> 12 <para>Change the value of the <emphasis>UTC</emphasis> variable below to a 13 <emphasis>0</emphasis> (zero) if your hardware clock is not set to GMT 14 time.</para> 19 15 20 16 <para>Create a new file <filename>/etc/sysconfig/clock</filename> by running … … 24 20 # Begin /etc/sysconfig/clock 25 21 26 UTC= 022 UTC=1 27 23 28 24 # End /etc/sysconfig/clock
