Steps to reproduce:
executed the following command in the directory:

LDFLAGS=-static ./configure --prefix=$LFS/static --disable-nls \
&& make \
&& make install

build date:2003-03-15
Platform: Mandrake Linux 8.1 on intel pc.

Additional Information:
The configure script reported no errors.
The last few lines of the make command:
