There has been a change in the way gdm is configured. You can find the documentation here: http://library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/2.28/configuration.html.en#daemonconfig
As a result, the description in the book is not quite correct anymore. (The 'defaults.conf' file isn't installed anymore.) Also, D-BUS needs to be restarted to read newly installed configuration files. (At least on my systems.)
I suggest the following changes: (See attached patch)
