The developers have responded on the ticket that I opened and their solution does work.

In doc/platform.texi

lib /machine:i386 /def:..\lib\foo-version.def /out:foo.lib

\lib\foo needs to have the \ replaced by:

‍@backslashchar{}‍

Then the pdf and dvi documents are generated and upon completion the popd directive pops you back into the top level of the source code tree.

Thanks to Bruce for asking to double-check problems building documentation.

Thanks to Christopher for reporting a solution for doc/platform.texi.

I included the fix to explicitly work for i386.

Please, would like someone to test in x86_64, so could change the sed for fixing in both architectures, if failure is confirmed.

Bruce, I have found four more problems building documentation, all fixed in the update.

No idea if one search sub-directory should be included in api documentation install, or if it is just for the build stage. If not need to install, some changes I did could probably be reverted after removal of this search directory.
