#5443 closed enhancement (fixed)

TeX Live does not require the binary installer.

Description

There is texlive-20140525-texmf.tar.xz alongside the -source tarball. This contains all the texmf stuff, but it is 1.7GB so probably too big to mirror at anduin.

Installing xindy (for indexing a PDF) and asymptote (for pictures, e.g. figures) requires a double build of texlive if not using the binary: first install "basic" texlive without xindy (which requires latex), then rebuild. Asymptote can be built at this stage (technically, it could be built with the 'basic' part, but its testsuite fails if TeX has not been installed and put on the PATH. The binary includes a version of biber (the modern replacement for bibtex, for bibliographies, but that is not included in the texlive source because of its _many_ perl dependencies.

All tested with 7.5 and current svn, but I'll mark this for 7.7 because it means a major text rework in texlive.

Please do not remove the section on the binary installer. As with the Java binary install, users may decide the pre-built is good enough and the binary install of TeXlive is complex enough to have it's own section.
