HJL Binutils, version 2.17.50.0.18 seems to work better with gcc-4.2.1 and glibc-2.6.1, especially for x86_64. At present, there seems to be bootstrappability issues with x86_64 and FSF binutils on new hosts - Debian Lenny is a good test case.
