Please adjust kernel.xml so that it nolonger creates modules.conf and creates modprobe.conf instead. I dont think the 2.6.x kernels even look at modules.conf anymore.

And you would be correct, according to the manpage the modprobe from module-init-tools specifically mention modprobe.conf and not modules.conf.
This will be fixed soon.
