The problem with kde releases is that some apps are kde4 only, some are kf5 only, and some are both. Without checking each individual app, it's hard to tell.

We could drop KDE4, but that causes problems for apps like k3b and amarok. We could change the kde4 section where we are building kdelibs only and dependencies only and drop the rest.

Of the apps in the KDE Additional Applications section, I believe that okular is the only one that will not run with kf5 (although I have a git version running in that environment). Looking at the CMakeLists.txt file in each of the apps in the 15.12.1 directory:

konsole is kf5 only
kmix is OK for either envronment
Kate is kf5 only
Ark is kf5 only
libkcddb is kde4 only
Kdepim-runtime is kf5 only
Kdepim is kf5 only
libkexiv2 is kf5 only
Kdeplasma-addons is not in 15.12.1
Okular is kde4 only
libkdcraw is kf5 only
Gwenview is kf5 only

For KDE4 Core packages that match filenames in the 15.12.1 directory:

akonadi is kf5 only
kdelibs is kde4 only (version 4.14.16)
kdepimlibs is kde4 only
baloo-widgets is kf5 only
kde-runtime is kde4 only
kde-baseapps is kde4 only

Checking the i18n files (only en_GB), it appears that it supports both environments.

The question is: Which way do we go for the book?

I've read this one earlier, today, couldn't get a mental summary for my opinion and cannot read very well now. Tomorrow, will try. Sorry, for the delay.

The above entry for kdepimlibs is incorrect. It is kf5 only.

Resolution: fixed
Status: assignedclosed

Fixed at revision 16805.

Note that some upstream directories have been removed so I had to change urls for the KDE4 kdepim and kdepim-runtime to the BLFS master repository.

Also, the build stats other than md5sums did not change.

Closing the ticket but we still need to decide about how long we need to keep KDE4 around.

Replying to bdubbs@…:

We could drop KDE4, but that causes problems for apps like k3b and amarok. We could change the kde4 section where we are building kdelibs only and dependencies only and drop the rest.

So, kdelibs only and dependencies left, thus k3b and amarok would not be broken. OK, with me.

Of the apps in the KDE Additional Applications section, I believe that okular is the only one that will not run with kf5 (although I have a git version running in that environment). Looking at the CMakeLists.txt file in each of the apps in the 15.12.1 directory:

libkcddb is kde4 only

This one is only for k3b, and would be left for that.

Okular is kde4 only

The git version you have can be used, until it is properly released or needed to update for other reasons.

For KDE4 Core packages that match filenames in the 15.12.1 directory:

kdepimlibs is kde4 only

I see there is a new version in the link you gave at -dev:

http://download.kde.org/stable/applications/15.12.1/src/kdepimlibs-15.12.1.tar.xz

The question is: Which way do we go for the book?

I think it is OK
