It seems that the some developers do not pay any attention to the stable/development status of libraries they are using for stable releases. We are in the same situation with librsvg-2.42.3 (Waiting for cairo 1.16.0).
Just a question. Would a patch be better than an update to a development version? I'm really not sure how I would answer that.

Fixed the currency script to use atk development versions.

Yes we did. It was a requirement for GNOME-3.28.2. I believe DJ was the one who found it originally. It'd be better to ask him why it was required, I just took his word for it.
