Here's the procedure I used to get a proper tarball:
wget https://salsa.debian.org/iso-codes-team/iso-codes/-/archive/iso-codes-4.6.0/iso-codes-4.6.0.tar.gz tar -xvf iso-codes-4.6.0.tar.gz mv -v iso-codes-iso-codes-4.6.0-3c012d266acaeda93d3e61ec11b8c18c1964fce1/ iso-codes-4.6.0/ tar -cJvf iso-codes-4.6.0.tar.xz iso-codes-4.6.0 rm -rf iso-codes-4.6.0 file iso-codes-4.6.0.tar.xz scp iso-codes-4.6.0.tar.xz anduin.linuxfromscratch.org:/srv/www/BLFS/iso-codes/
Running 'file' at the end gives me peace of mind since I've uploaded BZ2 compressed files with a .xz extension before :)
MD5SUM is 88e45124c9906029e4a6b3c728379698
Tarball is uploaded and good to go.

A tarball is avaliable at https://salsa.debian.org/iso-codes-team/iso-codes/-/archive/iso-codes-4.6.0/iso-codes-4.6.0.tar.gz. But it untars into a directory with stupid name:
iso-codes-iso-codes-4.6.0-3c012d266acaeda93d3e61ec11b8c18c1964fce1And the sed in the book is still needed. I think the maintainers from "a commercial distro" always use a package manager so they didn't this bug.
