Another thing that needs to be addressed is the build failure with --enable-pango. I haven't checked if the fix they were working on upstream is in the new packages for firefox and thunderbird. Normally, they don't backport these kind of fixes.
If it hasn't been fixed, the firefox patch should apply straight away.

Looking at the bug from that patch, it looks like the developer decided not to backport to the gecko 1.8 branch, so that patch is needed.
