Add new gnome packages

A lot of the gnome packages have newer replacements evince: papers totem/gnome-videos (we don't have this but just documenting): showtime eog (Eye of Gnome): loupe gnome-terminal: gnome-console (not a fully featured replacement) many distros have also moved to Ptyxis ​https://gitlab.gnome.org/chergert/ptyxis

We're also missing a lot of useful apps (mainly gnome-calendar): See this list for the gnome core apps ​https://apps.gnome.org/.

I've tested all 3 of the replacements and they look much more in place compared to the older gtk3/non-libadwaita apps.

IMO we should really not introduce more packages unless absolutely necessary. The book is already only barely maintainable.

Can Papers read DVI or epub files? That's part of the reason why I never looked seriously at moving it, as the person who maintains the section I rely off that functionality quite a lot

I never proposed Papers for the book despite I'm using it, exactly because it supports less formats than Evince.

Per the upstream Papers will never support DVI. But evince does not support epub either.

Sorry about that, I use Okular for epub and forgot :) still though, lack of DVI is a problem for me at least

OTOH the DVI backend of Evince just runs dvipdfm to convert .dvi to .pdf then display the .pdf. It's not so difficult to do it manually anyway.

I honestly forgot that DVI files existed I haven't seen one in 10+ years and I always hated seeing them because the fonts would never work properly because I used to only install like 2 fonts on my systems.

I think Loupe is a no-brainer, I think I brought it up in the original conversation about Snapshot like 2 years ago.

I'm also going to put in Showtime I think. VLC not having a GUI anymore does make it a bit more difficult to use.

Can we remove gnome-maps and replace it with gnome-calendar IMO maps is almost useless of you have a web browser installed Calendar allows for deeper integration and better notifications for events without a browser calendar.

I disagree in the case of Maps, I use it anytime I'm out by my grandparents in rural Iowa because I can download the entire map to my laptop and not have to worry as much when I hit cell blackouts.

On the other hand, gnome-calendar is something I don't mind adding and will add to my list. The dependencies look rather standard.

So far that leaves me with adding Showtime, replacing Eog with Loupe (assuming capabilities are similar), and adding gnome-calendar.

Adding packages is something I would like to avoid due to the maintenance. At a minimum I have to change the currency scripts. That's not terribly hard but it just one more task.

Would a page like ​https://rivendell.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/stable/kde/add-pkgs.html for gnome be a reasonable alternative?

That is a possible alternative and is something I'll look into.

The reason why I want to add Showtime though is because we don't really have a decent video player on systems that don't use Vulkan at the moment. We had VLC, but the version of VLC we have now doesn't have a GUI because we dropped Qt5. While MPV does work, it doesn't have the same featureset that something like Showtime does with different codecs.

I do really use Maps as well. And Evolution already provides a calendar functionality.
