#2330 closed defect (fixed)

Rework the drivers lists in Xorg 6.9.0 and XFree86 host.def's

Description

Since it isn't listed there, I managed to forgot it from my first Xorg 6.9.0 build. Many more people use i810-i945 than i740, so why is i740 mentioned, but i810 not?

Renaming the ticket since this is a general issue with the example host.def's.

Note that Xorg-6.9.0 doesn't exist in BLFS-SVN, but XFree does, so any changes there should go in both books.

Another point was brought up on the list a little while ago (why I renamed the ticket). The XFree host.def doesn't list all the input drivers, including keyboard.

In both cases, the list of drivers should be complete, preferably with a comment on which are useful. The input drivers section on the 6.9.0 page is closest to this.

There's really nothing that can be done for Xorg-6.9. Any notes about it will have to be in errata. We don't change stable books, and it is no longer in the development book.

But Xorg-6.9.0 still exists in the 6.2 branch, right?

comment:5 by Randy McMurchy, 17 years ago

Yes. However, because my suggestion some time ago to make an LFS-6.3 seems popular (and seems there is motivation to making it happen), most likely the 6.2 branch is dead, and we'll move straight to BLFS-6.3.

The only reason we had a 6.2.x in the first place is because I didn't want to wait around for year(s) to get a new LFS version out, so we could make a new BLFS version.

Now that Matthew is somewhat committed (at least that is what my take on his last couple of comments are) in releasing LFS regularly, we can follow along the natural progression.

Don't you agree? Or do you feel we should release a 6.2.x book before a 6.3 book? Understand, keeping up the 6.2 branch is *a lot* of work, and it doesn't appear to be necessary any longer.

Yeah, that seems reasonable. In the ideal world (i.e., if there was enough manpower), we could do 6.3 and still maintain a 6.2 series with bug and security fixes for 6.2.x. But it's enough energy just to keep pace in one development track.

This should probably be stated on blfs-dev in case anyone has the wrong impression, though.

The driver list should be probably completely removed. Without it, all working drivers (including i810) are built.

I took Alexander's suggestion (sort of). The list of video and input drivers in the XFree86 example host.def shows what you'll get on x86 Linux by default. But they're actually commented out with a note that the build will pick the correct drivers for the platform by default.

This all went in in r6776. Closing.
