Git 2.56.0 Release Highlights
The open-source Git project released Git 2.56.0 with contributions from over 104 developers. This release focuses heavily on history editing, conflict resolution, and preventing typos:
git history drop <commit>: An experimental new feature that performs "history surgery" by dropping a targeted commit and replaying its descendants cleanly onto its parent.
git add --resolved: This new flag allows developers to easily stage files where conflicts have been resolved, checking to ensure no raw conflict markers were accidentally left behind.
git replay --linearize: Flattens complex merge topologies into a linear sequence without needing to manipulate the working tree directly.
Typo Correction: Git is now friendlier with common CLI slip-ups. For example, if you mistakenly type git push origin/main, it catches the typo and suggests the proper git push origin main command.
The Path to Git 3.0: Maintainers confirmed that Git 3.0 remains the ultimate breaking point where repository defaults will change and Rust will become a build requirement.
