So it is. We don't recommend running tests as root (in fact, in general we rate the tests as "optional"), so I guess the wiki is the place to note this. The page in the wiki is there if you'd like to do this.
Strange that it doesn't seem to have created ~/missing.xml when I ran the tests as myself, and if it attempted to create /missing.xml on that run it wasn't obvious.

It's already upgraded. But there's one issue I noticed:
File /missing.xml is created during 'make check' (run by root) and is not removed automatically.
