HAL-0.5.9.1 has a repeatable segfault on serial device check. I had trouble finding the issue until I ran the GDB on it as suggested in the hald man page. I typed the function name 'serial_get_prober' in yahoo and up came the bug report with the patch at

Current BLFS SVN has hal 0.5.14 that is probably going to be removed in near future since it's deprecated. I will mark this as fixed.

Changing everything to reflect this is from a released "stable" book. There's really nothing we can do about this other than put a note on the errata page.
Trunk will be fixed when we update HAL.
