#3352 closed task (fixed)

gimp-2.8.0

Description

New version at ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.8.

Users should note that 'save as' now only deals with the xcf files, for formats such as jpeg or png you have to use File->Export.

Note that babl and gegl need to be updated.

I've only given this a rudimentary test (did some good testing on -RC0 yesterday, pleased to find that an annoying bug (false error message that work had not been saved when closing after exporting) appears to have been fixed in the release. Will do some more testing.

Was going to upgrade it today in my machines. Now, waiting for your page. Liked this, together with babl and gegl. Remember when you had no interest in gimp-2.6.12 'cause were waiting for this one :-). Thank you very much for these! Any test or help, I am willing to do.

I suggest that you go ahead and install it (with babl0.1.10 and gegl 0.2.0) I believe I'm using the same instructions as are in the book for 2.6 - haven't checked if they are perfect, but they are good enough to get it installed. I want to spend a few hours manipulating some of my raw photos, and then I'll start measuring all three build and checking the details. If it works ok for me (I only do simple photo manipulations, but even those occasionally trigger bugs) I'll put them in the book, but probably not for a day or two, maybe a little longer.

So, any problems you or anyone else notice in your own testing would be useful, and hopefully you'll be using the fresh software a little bit sooner.

I was wrong about the bogus 'Save changes before closing?' bug - raised as https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=675399 - not enough to stop me using this, just annoying.

There are a couple of known regressions (from the release notes):

Known Regressions

GIMP 2.8 relies on a newer version of GTK+2 that unfortunately has partially broken support for graphics tablets such as Wacom. If your graphic tablet doesn't work in GIMP 2.8 as it should, we recommend downgrading to 2.6 until we release GIMP 3.0 that relies on GTK+3 which has fully functional support for advanced input devices.

To address the needs to migrate from the old tools presets system to the new one we provide a script in Python. However, the old tools presets are not 100% convertible to the new tool presets. For instance, brush scale from 2.6 can't be converted to brush size in 2.8.

Besides the File->Export annoyance, everything seems to be working.

Thanks again, Ken

Glad to hear it. Seems fine here on LFS-svn.

Apparently, its deliberate. I hope everyone enjoys either saving the xcf version of their work, or getting this useless message if they've only exported it. Not enough to stop me updating the book on this occasion, but a PITA.
