kde versioning seems to have turned into a real mess. We are still on kate-4.14.3 and when I found a mirror which would let me list the directory that version is dated 14th November. But while browsing in ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/applications/14.12.3/src/ I saw that kate-14.12.3 was released on 27th Feb.

This is actually invalid for us. Upstream isn't doing any favors. They are mixing kf5 apps with kde4 apps. The version you mention, along with konsole and gwenview are only for kf5.
See https://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-applications-14.12.0.php third paragraph. kf5 apps are not compatible with the rest of kde4.
