I was just looking at this. It seem to work fine from the command line both over ssh to a xfce desktop and in twm. I get the same results for the tests.
Works OK from KDE too, but the fontforge.desktop was not installed by default. When I copied it to /usr/share/applications, it ran fine from the menu.
As an aside, I really don't like the KDE menu. It used the GenericName, 'Font Editor', in the Graphics group when I was looking for 'fontforge'. I certainly like the XFCE menu implementation better.

I have a problem here.
It works fine, when launched from a terminal. However, from the menu (LXDE or XFCE), the splash screen freezes.
So, the package works, splash screen is transitory, from a terminal, but behaves badly, from menu.
Test results:
Question is how to handle this.
If someone could confirm that it is broken with other desktop environment or window manager, perhaps a note would suffice. If it works for someone else, the note could be "Fontforge needs to be started from a terminal, for some desktop environments or window managers.", or there is a problem in my system, if it works in LXDE or XFCE.
Anyway, I am stopping for today.
