I don't think this is valid.
4.1.0b1 *looks* like a beta version but if you look at the release dates in the ftp archive:
-rw-r--r-- 1 500 root 301291 Feb 9 1999 libungif-4.1.0.tar.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 500 500 351757 Feb 17 2000 libungif-4.1.0b1.tar.gz
which suggests that 4.1.0b1 is the newest version. Also, I've just checked in the changelog in 4.1.0b1 and it is definately the newest version.
Reclosing the bug.

The download location for 4.1.0b1 no longer seems to work. People can only find 4.1.0 on the web now. Look into this and if it can't be found, perhaps ask the maintainer and/or put 4.1.0b1 on shadowfax (I have a copy here).

bruce has found working download location (think it was mentioned on the libungif website) - think we can close this one for now.....

I did find a working web site, but not the official one. It's now available at http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~bdubbs, but I don't know if there are legal issues. If we decide to make it available, I can move it to the normal download location.
It is also available at: http://www.linuxpackages.net/packages/Slackware-8/robert/libungif-4.1.0b1/source/

Fixed download location and added note to handle situation when compile fails.
During imlib testing, discovered that libungif will utilize X11 if installed.
