Description ¶
The zip and unzip programs have not been updated in about seven years. Upstream makes it very difficult to check for updates via the currency checks.
Check for new versions prior to a new BLFS release.

Any interest in replacing these with minizip/miniunzip included with the zlib source tarball? More info: http://www.winimage.com/zLibDll/minizip.html For our use, the demo programs should probably be fine (though I haven't actually verified this). No idea on the consequences of the current UTF-8 issues but at least this is maintained with zlib. Most of the distros ignore the demos, but do install the library. There are probably others, but VLC is the only package in BLFS that I know can use it.
cd contrib/minizip && autoreconf -i && ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-demos && make && make install && install -vm644 mini{,un}zip.1 /usr/share/man/man1

I'm not really interested. Looking at the extracted files, zlib was last updated in 2005. unzip is still old, built not that old -- 2009. I don't think either is maintained.
I suspect both would work for our purposes, but making a change would be work for an older package for no perceivable gain.

Their ftp seems to be back up, and it can be used again in currency scripts and in the book.
