seems so that gcr is not (or no longer) an optional/recommended dependency but its required
After installing gcr this works fine

I'm going to mark this as invalid. The package builds fine if --disable-gcr is passed to configure. We have gcr as recommended which means that we expect it to be installed. It is up to the user to pass the needed options if the recommended packages are not installed.
