I tested version 4.0 and 4.6, obtaining same error messages: 'assertion failed', linking file makedoc. The command tried by make was: gcc -g -O2 -static -o makedoc makedoc.o ../lib/libtxi.a -lcurses I tried that command, erasing the reference to curses library and it was OK. Then i did the make and make install again, with a full sucess.

Version increment (4.8) - see NEWS file for details. No explicit mention of the Italian locale related segfault from what I can see, though I'm probably missing something. Need to test that the patch is no longer necessary.

Italian locale segfault was with Sed, not with Texinfo

Yep, thanks Alexander. The texinfo patch did fix a segfault, but I've tested the new version and it's no longer required - at least the test case given in the patch no longer segfaults.
