This appears to break automake-1.12.0's testsuite. Full details in automake upstream bug report ​http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-automake/2012-05/msg00032.html.

Not just testsuite, but automake itself. 

main::scan_file() called too early to check prototype at /usr/bin/aclocal line 642.
configure.in:22: error: automatic de-ANSI-fication support has been removed
