I talked to the guys at freshmeat, and they said if you were to add

packages in the dependancy section of the LFS project at freashmeat, then when someone subscribed to LFS there, they could subscribe to all the needed projects as well. It woul save people, like me, from having to subscribe to each individual package that the LFS core is made from.

Now there's a good idea. Now if all packages we use with LFS were actually actively maintained through freshmeat it would even make our lives (lfs book editors) easier too. As it stands, we still have to go all offical sites every other week to check if something new has been released.

I'll add this idea to the bug tracking database. One of the editors (me or somebody else) will get to Freshmeat and add all the deps.

Thanks again for the idea,

I've added all the packages to the LFS dependencies in freshmeat. One or two packages didn't have freshmeat entries:

  • gawk
  • LFS-bootscripts (fairly obviously)
  • MAKEDEV (again, obvious)
  • reiserfsprogs

-- reiserfs has an entry but it's for the filesystem itself, not the programs - this will be irrelevant soon anyways when we remove reiserfs from the book

-- gawk - should we contact the gawk maintainers and ask if they intend on adding their project to freshmeat?

-- LFS-bootscripts and LFS-MAKEDEV - would it be worth adding these to freshmeat so people can keep up with releases? Obviously, I'll maintain the LFS-MAKEDEV page if we reckon it's a good idea.

Once we have this finally sorted (it isn't until the gawk page is sorted so please don't close the bug), should we add a pointer in the book to the freshmeat entries so that people know then can use them as suggested in the previous comment.

Finally, Gerard, do you want to unsubscribe lfs-book from the individual release announcements and then subscribe it to the LFS project and it's dependenices. The reason I suggest this is that we could add to the editor's guide that when adding/removing a project to/from LFS, you *must* update the freshmeat dependency list. That way, lfs-book will always be subscribed to the right projects totally automatically.

As Tushar pointed out to me:

Crap. How did I miss that!?! To defend myself, searching for gawk didn't reveal anything :-) I'll add a note to bugzilla saying that it was found.

That just leaves the bootscripts and MAKEDEV (we'll ignore reiser).

Mark, you may want to close it. I did those Freshmeat additions a while ago.
