Description
The problem is not in the book itself, but in the package archive I got from ftp://ftp.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs-packages/3.3/lfs-packages-3.3.tar .
Specifically, the file tar-1.13.tar.bz2 is identical to tar-1.13.patch.bz2 (except for the name).

I just double checked this, the archive is fine. A similar bug was reported a while back also, and it was null. Considering the thousands of ppl that have used this archive since 3.3 is out, would have said something sooner :) Closing.
