Description
It would be important to document also environment variables used by important system components, at least those that affect from which patch other libraries, configuration files etc. are searched / read.

Thanks for the document. Some of those variables are documented in the glibc info pages, some are not. The ones that are not are generally only useful to folks hacking on glibc. I don't really see the value of putting all of this info into the book itself. I disagree with your assertion that "It's pretty important for people building systems from scratch!". The info might be perfect for an LFS hint. Would you consider making an LFS hint out of this?
