Gettext also depends on aclocal. If your host system doesn't have aclocal-1.7 then gettext won't compile and youll need to compile automake to obtain aclocal-1.7

No. I just tested this by removing all traces of automake and aclocal. Gettext compiled fine. There must be some other reason for the problem you experienced. Either way, not enough detail (like an error message) has been provided to figure out what's up. Closing.
