Just for reference in the future, whenever we upgrade gcc; [09:54:53] <EsdiDude> HIghoS: file 3.39 is out, and 3.37 refuses to compile on newer (glibc 2.2.5/gcc 3.1.1) system [09:54:59] <EsdiDude> 3.39 compiles fine btw

Tush, has the URL changed? I'm trying ​ftp://ftp.gw.com/pub/unix/file/ which only has 4.00 on. Regarding bugzilla it's a daft permissions thing which I'm not sure is configurable, but Jesse and/or Gerard might know better.

file-4.11 doesn't compile with the current instructions. ./configure works just fine, but then we invoke make and get the following:

"libtool: ltconfig version ' does not match ltmain.sh version 1.4a' Fatal configuration error. See the libtool docs for more information.".

Running libtoolize --force before ./configure works around this. The only problem with this is that we currently try and install 'file' just *before* libtool in chapter 6, although this can be mitigated by providing a patch instead. I can't find a file related mailing list, although the maintainer has his email address in README. Does anyone more well versed in all things libtool/autotools know of the correct fix for this problem? I *think* it's an upstream prob, but I'd appreciate confirmation before sending a report.
