It appears that the libexif package should be moved to the required dependencies section of Nautilus as the build fails if libexif is not installed. There are no flags allowing the configure stage to bypass looking for libexif and examination of the configure script doesn't show any way to avoid looking for it as well.

Added libexif-0.6.12 as a new package to BLFS and updated the Nautilus instructions to include libexif as a required dependency.
