#1381 closed defect (fixed)

Samba installation needs nobody user

Reported by: info.2004-03-27@… Owned by: Randy McMurchy
Priority: high Milestone:
Component: BOOK Version: SVN
Severity: high Keywords:
Cc: bdubbs@…

Description

The Samba installation, as described in the BLFS Book, does not work. Starting smbd will failed as long as you do not have a user nobody. Add the user nobody and Samba will start:

groupadd nobody useradd -d /dev/null -c "nobody user for Samba" -g nobody -s /bin/false nobody

nobody is added in the BLFS Book when installing another package, but if I do not install it I don't have nobody.

Another Problem: This line in install manual will fail: chmod 644 /usr/lib/samba/libsmbclient.a Because /usr/lib/samba/libsmbclient.a is not present. Maybe copy it with: cp bin/libsmbclient.a /usr/lib/samba But I don't know if it's ok.

There are two issues in the bug. The issue with libsmbclient.a not being present if fixed in SVN.

The other issue about user nobody is a valid issue. If a guest user for Samba is not definded in the smb.conf file, then the default is to fall back to the 'nobody' user. And if the 'nobody' user does not exist, the smbd daemon will not start. I have confirmed this.

Two ways to go about fixing this. One, add instructions to create a 'nobody' user and a 'nogroup' group. I know Bruce has assigneed to himself the bug about creating BLFS users and groups. If he is going to create a section in the book about creating users and groups, then I sure he will had the nobody user and nogroup group, which means we need do nothing to the Samba instructions.

The second option would be to provide instructions in the Samba configuration text to modify the smb.conf file and ensure that if they don't explicitly define a guest user, to ensure they have a 'nobody' user.

I vote for explicit creation of smb.conf by hand, because there is one more inappropriate default: "unix charset" defaults to UTF-8.

Alexander,

Creating the smb.conf file by hand is what we now have in the book. The BLFS installation specifically says that a default file is copied to /etc/samba, but must be renamed and edited, to be of any value.
