Let's move this to 99-Waiting for now to go with pygtk/gimp since we might be dropping it this cycle.

In https://lists.linuxfromscratch.org/sympa/arc/blfs-dev/2024-07/msg00052.html Xi said someone will need to patch GIMP and GTK2.
My outgoing mail is currently broken (authorisation changes) although incoming mail with fetchmail is now working. So please treat this as a reply to that post.
There is also CVE-2024-6655 which applies to GTK2 as much as to GTK3. From the link #20068 I've found the gitlab change, looks a simple enough backport.
I know the lack of editor time, and I use gimp2 so I'll do this.

On current BLFS-dev the PoC for gtk2 does not work. That might not be true for anyone running an older system.

Fixed in 12.1-1254 sha:f8d6cf0f7b49 - my previous method of specifying that as sha:r12.1-1254-f8d6cf0f7b49 appears to no-longer be acceptable to Trac.

I thought I got a slightly different error message from trying to test the PoC last night, and that I had noted it, or else reported it in a post, but I cannot now find that and the system has been updated.
My oldest available system is BLFS-11.2 with previous updates. On that the PoC similarly fails, only reporting that it failed to load module "atk2-bridge".
We may archive GTK-2 in this development cycle after GIMP-3 is out.
