I learned the hard way that gimp won't build against gutenprint. You need gimp-print installed if you want printing from gimp. (As they document, you can have both gimp-print and gutenprint installed.) Another anomaly is that they fight over the print plugin in the gimp plugin directory. If you install gutenprint you get its print plugin and then if you install gimp it replaces it with the gimp-print plugin. (This was all observed with gimp 2.2.13)

Does the following work for you?
- Install GIMP *without* Gimp-Print
- Install Gutenprint *after* GIMP
- Print a photo from GIMP
That's what works here. So you are basically asking about rechecking dependencies (and possibly adding a note about the obsolete dependency of GIMP on Gimp-Print), not about keeping Gimp-Print in the book.

Excellent -- that does indeed work. When the time comes to replace gimp-print with gutenprint in the book, a note with gimp explaining that you have to configure it --disable-print and trust us, we'll fill it in with gutenprint should take care of it.

Due to the issues noted above, and the short time we'd have for testing, let's move this one to post-6.2. If anyone thinks we really need to update Gimp-Print before 6.2, please annotate here or on the -dev list.

Summary: | Gutenprint-5.0.0 (formerly Gimp-Print) → Gutenprint-5.0.1 (formerly Gimp-Print) |
This one is going in soon. I've tested many times. Just need to bite the bullet and remove Gimp-Print and make the change.
Of course, because it involves the ability to print in a freshly-built system, as well as print support for the Gimp (which must be built before this package to gain print support) there is a bit of concern.

Added Gutenprint-5.0.1 to the book, and commented out the Gimp-Print instructions. Also modified the Gimp instructions by adding the --disable-print switch to the configure script. Additionally in the Gimp instructions, added a note in the description for --disable-print that you should install Gutenprint (after the Gimp installation) if you need printing capability.
Works fine with my Epson Stylus C84
