from ./configure --help: --enable-wide-chars enable wide-character support

Why does it work anyhow?

If I got it right ' --enable-luit' enables wide-character support automatically.

Hmm, that must have changed. I think that if it finds luit in the path and you have ncursesw, then wide character support is turned on. I don't remember offhand.
