Description
Right now, BLFS includes Pine plus a big patch that is questionable from a legal viewpoint (because distribution of modified Pine versions is prohibited), but required in order to have a functional Pine in UTF-8 based system. Alpine (http://www.washington.edu/alpine/) is a fork of the last Pine version that didn't have the offending clause in the license, and incorporates this patch and many others. I recommend switching. The page (http://www.suse.de/~bk/pine/FAQ.html) where we got this patch from now says it is deprecated in favor of Alpine.

Me too. And pine is probably no longer maintained. If Linus says nothin' but good things about alpine, it's good.

NB - development of alpine stopped, but was forked to re-alpinehttp://sourceforge.net/projects/re-alpine/files/ - current version 2.02

Marking as duplicate to #3312 because that ticket has the build instructions.
+1
I used it briefly in the pre-1.0 days before convincing myself to try mutt again, and it seemed fine. FWIW, I recall reading an interview with Linus Torvalds where he said alpine was his main mail client, and he had nothing but good things to say about it.
