FYI: Most of the packages compile ok with alsa-1.x if CPPFLAGS="-DALSA_PCM_OLD_HW_PARAMS_API -DALSA_PCM_OLD_SW_PARAMS_API" is passed to configure.

Status of BLFS packages that depend on ALSA:
- Arts + KDE (OK)
- gst-plugins (0.7.x is ok, need to test 0.6.x)
- SDL (requires -DALSA_PCM_OLD_HW_PARAMS_API)
- libao (requires -DALSA_PCM_OLD_HW_PARAMS_API)
- xine (OK)
- mplayer (OK)
- j2sdk (OK)

Based on <http://archives.linuxfromscratch.org/mail-archives/blfs-dev/2004-February/005132.html>, looks like alsa-1.x is ready. To summarize, the following packages will need additional CPPFLAGS passed as mentioned in Comment 3.
- gst-plugins (-DALSA_PCM_OLD_HW_PARAMS_API -DALSA_PCM_OLD_SW_PARAMS_API)
- SDL (-DALSA_PCM_OLD_HW_PARAMS_API)
- libao (-DALSA_PCM_OLD_HW_PARAMS_API)
Am unable to compile a non-BLFS package Timidity++ even with these flags, but that is a story for another day.
