My bad. I thought that 5.44.0 was the original (bad) one, and the version I had listed was new. Not sure how I didn't notice the date, as I thought I double-checked. Closing the ticket.

Actually, this has been out for over a year, and there were issues with it. The tarball is dated Jan. 2006 on the site. At the top of the expect.nist.gov site it says that 5.44 has been recalled. Here was what the maintainer had to say last year about this time when 5.43.0 was bizarrely replaced by a new tarball:

5.44.0 and 5.44.1 are actually exactly the same except 5.44.1 had configure actually regenerated with the new version numbers.
Someone may want to look into this new version if they have time, but I someone (Greg maybe) found out that it broke things.
