Subject: LFS suggestions
Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 21:28:51 +0000
I have successfully install LFS-3.0 then immediately
upgraded to LFS-3.1. I used the Changelog section in the
3.1 book to determine what to upgrade.
I've only encountered one problem, and found an easy
remedy. I used Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 as a base to start
with which does not install the crypt library (export
control issue). This causes sh-utils-2.0 to blow up
during the make. I found out that only su needed that
library so I simply copied all of the other shell
utilities into their proper places and continued on. The
statically linked su is not needed anywhere so the
remaining procedures work fine. Luckily, su was the last
item compiled under sh-utils.
I suggest a note be added to the "Installing Sh-utils-
2.0" section of chapter five, that at least points to a
hint giving the work around. I did not try "make
install" after the make failed. I suspect that might
work too.

This doesn't appear to be a really big issue. It's reported once, that 4 months ago. Not too many people use Caldera anymore and I rather not add a whole page of "if you use this, then that, or else this but not that if that other one applies too". Yes I'm a bit exaggerating but you get the idea.
It's in the mailing list archives, so if person #2 every comes up with this problem, a quick search will give the solution.
