Description
The following refers to the 20020830 LFS Book (CVS). Host System: Redhat 7.3 Downloaded all CVS LFS-packages today (20020831).
Having installed everything without typos exactly in accordance with the book, I had installed the static software in Chapter 5 with no error messages. Again, having installed precisely AS IS, I had completed installing everything THROUGH Flex-2.5.4a.
What followed was Binutils-2.13. Step 3 was typed as follows from the binutils-build directory created and entered during Steps 1&2:
BEGIN STEP3
../binutils-2.13/configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared
END STEP3
The only information printed was "segmentation fault".
It should be noted that I followed the CVS 20020826 LFS book without segmentation errors in the Binutils-2.13 configuration, build, and installation. I used the same host system.
I hope this information helps in fixing the bug. If there is more information needed, feel free to contact me.

This is a known problem with a statically linked bash-2.05b. Search the list archives for details. The bash maintainer has been notified but he cannot reproduce the problem and thus cannot fix it. We'll have to wait for the next release and see what happens.
If you look closely you will see that bash-2.05b has NOT been added to the CVS book.
LFS guys, it might be a good idea to remove this package from the LFS server to stop people from installing it.
